Bishop’s Stortford Community Football Club
Bishop’s Stortford Community Football Club was formed in 2005 with the merger of four local youth football clubs: Bishop’s Stortford Youth, Stortford Jets, Northolt and Bishop’s Stortford Swifts, all of which had been active for many years. The newly formed community club initially fielded boys’ and girls’ teams and quickly obtained its coveted FA Charter Standard Community Club status, which was presented by Sir Trevor Brooking in February 2005. This is the highest standard achievable by grass roots football clubs and recognises the Club’s achievement of promoting football for all abilities in and around Bishop’s Stortford. Since formation the Club has expanded to meet this broad ambition and now also supports veterans, ladies and disabled teams. Our fastest growing section is girls’ football, a priority in terms of the Club’s development.
Bishop’s Stortford Cricket Club
Founded in 1825, Bishop’s Stortford Cricket Club holds a remarkable place in sporting history, believed to be the oldest club in the world to have played continuously on the same ground. Originally a field owned by the local Hawkes Brewery, the Cricketfield Lane ground has hosted the club for two centuries, surviving two World Wars and witnessing the evolution of the game from its rudimentary origins to the modern Premier League standard. The club’s rich heritage even includes a visit from the legendary W.G. Grace, who played on the ground in 1868, cementing its status as a true cornerstone of Hertfordshire cricket.
Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Football Club
Formed in 1920, Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Football Club has grown from a local side playing on Dunmow Road to one of the leading clubs in the National Leagues. Since 1928, the club has called Silver Leys home—a ground with a prestigious heritage of its own, having originally been a polo field owned by Sir Walter Gilbey. That historic turf has proven to be a breeding ground for elite talent; over the decades, the club has helped develop household names such as British & Irish Lion Ben Clarke and modern England internationals like Max Malins and Ben Earl. Now competing in National League 1, the club celebrated its centenary in 2021, marking over 100 years of rugby excellence in the heart of the community.
